This Honors project gave me an opportunity to learn about a new animal that I have never heard of: the African Bush Viper. I’ve basically learned EVERYTHING about the Viper, from how it lives in the wild to its DNA sequence…I’ve even had to draw the African Bush Viper (took me a couple days!). I’ve even learned how to make a website… which is a very big deal for me because I don’t know much about technology (only about iPhones). Overall, the whole thing was very difficult because I had to spend hours on each section researching information that was near impossible to find (such as the reproduction section where you had to find the the genotypes and phenotypes) and also having to use things from what I’ve learned in class (which helped ALOT because it made it easier and faster to complete). Even though this Honors project was difficult, it was also kinda fun to work on. I’m pretty lucky that I picked a very interesting animal because I love learning about unique animals and drawing about them too (about half this project involved some kind of drawing).
On a scale from 1-10, with 10 being that I enjoyed it very much, it’ll be a 7. Although learning interesting facts about my animal was fun, most of the time was I was very frustrated because of the amount of work I had to do in little amour of time and of the hours of research I knew I had to do each time…and sometimes, I couldn’t find the information so I had to ask Ms. Beirne for help!
The hardest section of this project, would have to be the response section where you had to find the adaptations your animal evolved & you also had to make a cladogram of the ancestors and those adaptations. Finding how my animal adapted was hard at first, because the only thing I could think of was that it lost its arms and legs (I somehow managed to find the information though). There were very little websites that had information on the African Bush viper, so I had to search up “snakes” to be more general.
My favorite section, would have to be the Organism Identification because 1). I was researching where my organism lived, which led me to researching about the Tropical Rainforests for about an hour (Its my favorite place). And 2). I got the chance to draw the African Bush Viper.(Took me ALONG time but i enjoyed it because drawing is my hobby!). To be honest, The main reason I picked this animal was because of the bright and beautiful colors it had, and I wanted to draw them. This Honors Project had its pro’s and con’s, but I enjoyed it very much and I hope I can do something like this again in the future!
